On this page I have compiled a collection of various samples from different projects in order to better provide an idea of my process and varied experience.

Resume Reel

In video production a resume reel is a collection of shots and/or clips that are meant to provide an idea of method, style, philosophy of and experiences in visual story telling, usually presented in an interesting or slick way.

Interview Index

An example of an interview index from the project By Parties Unknown. Time code from the raw video, timeline markers, and color coded themes are included as well as internal notes and comments. This information was then used to build a working script.

School Curriculum

This is an example of high school curriculum created for a Folklore and Education class at the graduate level. It’s designed around the Kentucky Folklife Program’s “A Culture Carried” exhibit documenting the experiences and culture of the Bowling Green Kentucky Bosnian refugee community. I worked with classmate Madison Rippy on this project.

Grant Narrative

By Parties Unknown originally had a working title of A National Crime and included a dual narrative that involved another plot line tied in with Michael’s story. The grant narrative for the National Endowment for the Humanities provided here included those elements, and while the grant wasn’t awarded it does provide an example of the original scope of the project and our approach to request additional funding for it.

Neil and I were the authors of this grant with input from Jordan Basham, Michael Morrow, Molly Swietek, and Emily Wallace.

Conference Paper

Marathon Running as a Form of Pilgrimage: Exploring the Aspect of Intentionality in Spiritual Journeys.

In this paper I presented to the 2020 American Folklore Societie’s annual meeting (virtually), I explore the questions of whether or not distance runners have a spiritual experience through a ritual process of preparing for and running a marathon, whether or not that process can be considered as a form of pilgrimage, and to what extent the concept of pilgrimage is dependent on its participant engaging with the phenomenon with the specific intent as such. While most of the scholarly work and debate surrounding the phenomenon of pilgrimage has been centered on identifying it through its religious, spiritual, and cultural aspects with the question of the pilgrims’ intention is assumed as given, I explore the experience of marathon running with the idea of pilgrimage as being either unintended or unplanned.

Social Media

Coffee Near Me

Coffee Near Me replaced our previous current affairs program Outlook and shifted its focus to social media. This included primary distribution on Facebook and Youtube with additional outreach on Instagram. Hosted and produced by Barbara Deeb, Coffee Near Me would travel to different regional locations and seek out interesting individuals in the area to engage in friendly yet meaningful conversations about their experiences and projects. I was responsible for the visual acquisition, editing, distribution, and social media management.

Often, we would use Instagram to “tease” a location and conversations we were having there to promote upcoming episodes.
